Boxer-turned-movie star Mike Tyson has courted controversy by endorsing divisive presidential hopeful Donald Trump.
The star has thrown his weight behind the businessman-turned-politician as he seeks to become the Republican candidate in the upcoming 2016 U.S. presidential election.
Tyson is convinced Trump’s business acumen will be a huge asset for a U.S. president.
“He should be president of the United States,” he tells the Huffington Post. “Let’s try something new. Let’s run America like a business, where no colors matter. Whoever can do the job, gets the job… I like Trump.”
Trump has previously sparked outrage with his controversial comments about Mexican immigrants, but Mike is adamant the presidential hopeful has been misunderstood, even though his remarks were “crude.”
“I don’t think he thinks of Latinos in that way. I really don’t believe that,” Tyson adds. “He’s a businessman. He’s just saying what the people want and the people want to hear that. If you believe that he believes that, you have to believe that most of the country believes that because they’re voting for him.
“I don’t believe 90 percent of the country believe Latinos that were born here and their parents are illegal (and have) got to go. It hasn’t happened yet.”
Trump sparked controversy when he announced his plans to run for president by saying, “The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems. When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best… They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”
The comments sparked outrage among the Latino community and prompted condemnation from stars including Ricky Martin, Eva Longoria and America Ferrera.
Bosses at NBC also decided to drop their coverage of the businessman’s beauty pageants in the aftermath of the controversy.
